1. Overview & Key Capabilities
It pulls grades, missing-work counts, and Canvas activity live from your courses, turns them into a single risk score per student, and surrounds that with tools to monitor, track, and message students who need help.
Automatic risk scoring
Every active student is scored 0–100 from grade, missing assignments, and inactivity — ranked highest-risk first.
Watch List & Snapshots
Flag students to monitor and capture point-in-time records so you can see trends across the term.
Outreach & automation
Reusable email templates plus rules that send messages automatically when a student meets conditions you set.
AI insights
One click turns a student's risk profile into a plain-language summary with specific intervention suggestions.
2. Getting Started
The first time you open the tool, connect it to Canvas when prompted. This authorizes At Risk to read enrollment, grade, and activity data for the courses you teach. The tool uses your Canvas identity automatically — no student data leaves your institution's Canvas beyond what is shown in the tool.
3. Navigation & Interface
☰ Hamburger
Collapses or expands the left sidebar. The main content area slides to fill the space.
● Holon At Risk badge
Brand identifier. The green dot confirms the tool is active and connected to Canvas.
Avatar & Name
Your Canvas display name. Confirms which Canvas account is active.
A / A+ / A++
Accessibility font-size zoom controls. Enlarges text in the content area for readability.
4. How Risk Is Calculated
| Signal | Condition | Points |
|---|---|---|
| Current grade | Below 60% | +40 |
| 60–69% | +25 | |
| 70–79% | +10 | |
| Missing assignments | 5 or more | +30 |
| 3–4 | +20 | |
| 1–2 | +10 | |
| Days since last activity | More than 14 days | +20 |
| 8–14 days | +10 |
Points add up (capped at 100) into a risk level:
- High — score of 60 or more
- Medium — score of 30 to 59
- Low — score under 30
5. Scan
Sort by any column, filter the list, and click a student to open their detail panel — grade, missing work, last activity, risk breakdown, and the AI Insight button. Scans cover your active courses (up to 20 at a time) and active student enrollments only.
6. Watch List
Add anyone from the Scan results to your Watch List and they stay there so you can track them over time without re-finding them on each visit. The Dashboard surfaces your watched students at a glance across all courses.
7. Snapshots
Take a snapshot manually, or enable automatic snapshots, to record where students stand on a given date. Comparing snapshots shows whether a student is improving or sliding — especially useful before and after an intervention.
8. Email Templates
Write templates once — missing-work nudges, check-ins, encouragement — and reuse them for any student. Templates also power the automation rules in the Messages view.
9. Messages & Automation
The Messages view keeps a record of outreach and lets you create automation rules that send a templated message automatically whenever a student meets the conditions you define — so routine nudges send themselves.
10. AI Insights
On any student, the ✦ AI Insight button sends that student's risk profile — name, course, grade, missing assignments, days since last activity, and risk score — to your configured AI provider, which returns a short summary plus 2–3 specific intervention suggestions.
The AI interprets and recommends; it does not do the scoring (that's plain arithmetic). Insights are generated one student at a time, not in bulk, and only that student's risk-summary fields are sent.
11. AI Key (Holon Hub)
Claude (Anthropic)
Get a key at console.anthropic.com (starts with sk-ant-), paste it in the Hub, and every Holon tool's AI features use it automatically.
12. A Typical Workflow
- Open Scan to see who's at risk right now, ranked highest first.
- Click a high-risk student to review their grade, missing work, and inactivity — with an AI summary and suggested interventions.
- Add students you want to keep tracking to your Watch List.
- Reach out using an Email Template, or set an automation rule under Messages.
- Take a Snapshot periodically so you can see trends over the term.
13. FAQ & Tips
Are risk scores a final judgment?
No. They're a starting point for a conversation — always pair them with what you know about the student.
Which students are scanned?
Active student enrollments in your active courses (up to 20 courses at a time).
Why does a student show "unknown" last login?
Canvas has no recorded activity for them; the tool treats this as long-inactive.
Do I need an AI key to use the tool?
Only for AI Insights — and it is the one key saved in Holon Hub → Settings → AI Key. Scanning, scoring, watching, snapshots, and messaging all work without one.
